About asking and answering Word Up questions:When used while playing Word Up or one of the classroom quiz games on this site, the questions are read aloud. If the player reading the question is not sure how to pronounce one or more words, he or she may ask for another player, or the teacher, to help out. The player answering may ask for the question to be repeated, or ask for one or more words to be spelt. This applies also to Spelling questions except, of course, for the target word. The Question CategoriesMissing WordThe player asking the question reads the sentence, making an 'mmm' sound or saying 'dot dot dot' to indicate where the missing word is located and then states the number of letters the missing word contains. The player answering gives any word with this number of letters to complete the sentence. If more than one word can be correctly used within the context of the sentence, all are included on the answer page. Most players will find these the most challenging questions. Crossword CluesThe player asking the question reads the clue and then gives the first letter of the correct answer. Again, when more than one word is possible, all are included on the answer page. These questions test and develop vocabulary. Multiple ChoiceThe player asking reads the question plus the three alternative answers. The player answering repeats the correct alternative. These questions test grammar, vocabulary, idioms and general knowledge. SpellingThe player asking reads the sentence and then repeats the word printed in bold type. The player answering must spell this word correctly on the first attempt. Players do not need to specify capital letters or hyphens. British, American and alternative spellings are acceptable. Where more than one spelling is possible, this is usually indicated by an asterisk (*) and the alternative spelling is provided at the bottom of the page. Alternative spellings not included are also acceptable if found in a dictionary.
